Tom
loves studying nature and capturing
images in oil and pastel while on
location. From glistening pagodas to
whitewashed villages, Moroccan
bazaars to the California coast
Komala paints from life and captures
the vitality and uniqueness of each
diverse subject.
Tom Komala is a classically
trained artist and graduate of the
American Academy of Art in Chicago.
Growing up in Chicago, he found
early inspiration at the Art
Institute frequently studying the
work of John Singer Sargent,
J.M.W.Turner, George Innes and Mary
Cassat along with the many French
Impressionists in the collection.
Also, while studying at the Academy,
Tom was privileged to attend private
lessons in sculpture with Olivier
Rodin who had studied with his
renowned uncle, August Rodin ( The
Thinker, The Kiss, Balzac, etc.).
After finishing his studies in
Chicago, Tom left for Santa Fe
continuing his studies in
portraiture with Bettina Steinke and
landscape painting with Robert
Lougheed.
Artistic and cultural studies on
location include Austria, Belgium,
Burma, Cambodia, France, Germany,
Hong Kong, Italy, Mexico, Monaco,
Morocco, The Netherlands, Portugal,
Spain, Switzerland, and Thailand. He
presently resides in Denver where he
paints local landscapes and subject
matter as well as those encountered
on his travels.
